Annual Memorial Day Weekend

It?s that time of year again, and the St. Clair Township Travel & Tourism Bureau is gearing up for the 17th Annual Memorial Day Weekend Fireworks Festival. ?Every year, the attendance and the interest in participation grows?, says Debbie Koffel, Executive Director of the Board. This year, the event will be held on Sunday, May 28. It all begins at 9:30am at the Calcutta Community Park. The Tri-State Burial Group will raise the flag and then lower it to half-staff as well as pay tribute to those who have died for our country.

Over in Calcutta Square, things get started at 1:00pm with the Fireman?s Battle. Departments from the entire Tri-State Area come and participate. For the kids, a chalk art contest is held from 1-3pm, the Police & Fire Department Handcuff Relay is being held at 2pm and the Calcutta Lions Duck Race will be held at 4pm. Ducks can be purchased from noon till 4pm. For the car enthusiasts there will be a car cruise from 2-7pm

And, don?t forget the musical entertainment that starts at 1:30. At 9:30pm, Pyrotechnico will again light up the sky with their wonderful display of fireworks.

Don?t think that is all there is, because all day long, attendees can enjoy a wide variety of food and game. There will be several concession stands as well as a dime toss, dunk tank and several informational stands. As in years past, the Chinese Auction and the 50/50 Raffle will give those attending an opportunity to win cash and prizes. All drawings begin at 7pm and the 50/50 winner must be present. The winners at the Chinese Auction need not be present.

?This event costs around $20,000.00 to $25,000.00 each year. Without the community support and generosity, this event would not take place?, says Koffel. The Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department holds a Good Friday Fish Fry and all the proceeds are given for this event. ?Those firemen work for weeks/months to make the fish fry a success. They give of their time and effort and without the firemen, this event would not be what it is.

Giant Eagle allows the Tourism Board to hold a Steak Hoagie sale in their parking lot in April for two days. The Calcutta Rotary and the Boy Scouts have provided help for many years. There are many businesses whom not only donate money, anywhere from $25.00 to $3,000.00, but also give of their time and expertise, such as Campbell Signs and Apparel that provide the festival?s signs. Our electrician, Mark Neville and our carpenter, Mike Tice provide their expertise at no charge. Then, there is Calcutta Square. If we were not allowed to use this space, the festival would not be as expansive as it is.
